Building Code Updates

NORTH CAROLINA CONSTRUCTION CODES UPDATES

The North Carolina Building Code Council has adopted the following updated construction codes:

• 2012 NC State Building Code - Effective September 1, 2011
• 2012 NC Fire Code - Effective September 1, 2011
• 2012 NC Residential Code - Effective January 1, 2012
• 2012 NC Mechanical Code - Effective September 1, 2011
• 2012 NC Plumbing Code - Effective September 1, 2011
• 2012 NC Fuel Gas Code - Effective September 1, 2011
• 2012 NC Energy Conservation Code - Effective December 14, 2010
• 2014 NC Electrical Code - Effective April , 2016

The 2012 codes are based on the 2009 edition of the International Codes as published by the International Code Council (ICC) with North Carolina amendments. The 2011 NC Electrical Code is based on the 2011 edition of NFPA 70 - National Electrical Code. The North Carolina version is published and available for purchase through the International Code Council website at www.iccsafe.org. The NC amendments are available at the NCDoI website at

The following codes will remain in effect until further notice:

• 2015 NC Existing Building Code - Effective March 1, 2015
  
• 2012 NC Rehabilitation Building Code - Effective March 1, 2015
  
• 1999 NC Accessibility Code with 2002 and 2004 amendments
